Love Supreme Festival 2016 – One Month Away

With just a month to go until Love Supreme 2016, I thought I’d write a quick update for all the latest news and announcements for the festival.

Love Supreme Festival 2016 - Podpads
Love Supreme Festival 2016 Accommodation – Podpads

This year, Love Supreme are taking glamping to the next level with some SERIOUSLY comfortable accommodation options available.  If you’re looking for the ultimate luxury, Blue Bell Tents come with timber-framed beds with real mattresses, not to mention a 5m wide tent frame, allowing you plenty of room to relax and recharge your batteries throughout the festival. Quirky campers will love the Podpads, situated in the Boutique Camping Village, which also include free tea and coffee and free phone charging facilities throughout the festival. For fans of the Shire, get the Hobbiton feeling by staying in a Hobbit Hut (only 2-berth huts are still available so book no to avoid disappointment). Finally, if there is a large group of you attending the festival, why not get a Field Lounge Festival Gazebo, large enough to cover 6x 4-man tents, complete with hay bales, so come rain or shine, you can still eat, drink and be merry with your friends.

Verve Jazz Lounge

To celebrate The Verve’s 60th year as a record label, they will be at Love Supreme celebrating in a big way – with talks, film screenings, guest speakers, playbacks and artist interviews throughout the weekend. There will also be free Wi-Fi, so you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be busy! The full line-up of events planned will be on the Love Supreme website soon so keep an eye out for further updates.

Offering breakfasts and dinners, made on site from the freshest (and where possible local) ingredients, you can say goodbye to burgers and hot-dogs for this festival and feast in style! Banqueting tickets can be pre-booked and the food will be served at fixed times, so check out the full menu and serving times online to avoid disappointment.

Love Supreme 2016 – An Introduction

Earlier this month, the line up for the 4th iteration of Love Supreme Festival was announced, and following the lead from previous years it was far from disappointing.

Love Supreme 2016 Line Up

Opening the bidding with Burt Bacharach, Caro Emerald, Lianne La Havas, Grace Jones, Average White Band, Kelis, Giles Peterson and more, there is plenty already to entice you to buy your tickets for this weekend of jazz, soul, funk, blues and more. Set in front of the beautiful backdrop of Glynde Place, if you’ve not visited the area before it will give you an nice overview of the Sussex countryside in summertime.

Love Supreme 2016 Line Up Announcement

Targeted at people with older, slightly more diverse music tastes or those with young children looking for a festival that will be free of hypodermic needles and acres of muddy fields to traverse in adverse weather, Love Supreme has always been the kind of festival that you can bring your whole family too, from grandparents to toddlers, and everybody is sure to have a good time.

Love Supreme Festival – Better Every Year

Each year the festival has added to its offering, without ever overcrowding the site and taking away from one of its greatest virtues – it’s compact size. With enough empty space to avoid any horrible noise bleeding between the stages, wherever you are – the big top, the arena, the main stage (outdoors) or the bandstand, the rest of the festival will not be encroaching on you, but will only be a couple of minutes walk away.

The food stalls keep the site aromatic from breakfast til the early hours of the morning, with a wide range of different cultures’ foods on offer – long gone are the days when all that festivals had to offer was a greasy burger and chips and an expensive bar serving cheap beer for central London prices.

Love Supreme 2016 Tickets

Tickets went on sale on Feb 11th. Adult weekend tickets are available from £121 for non-camping and £159.50 for camping (including all booking fees). A weekend family camping ticket for 2 adults and up to 3 children costs just £352 (including all booking fees). Children under 5 can visit/camp for free when accompanied by an adult. Love Supreme 2015 in 3 Weeks

Its just under 3 weeks until Love Supreme and I for one can’t wait for it to come around! Having been to the previous 2 festivals in 2013 and 2014, it is just great to watch it grow up as a new festival with a strong family ethos, encouraging everyone to hear new music, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and really feel the Love Supreme!

Here is the latest playlist from the Love Supreme 2015 crew, displaying just some of the artists that are performing this year:

For those of you who have not been before, here is a brief rundown on just some of what you can expect at Love Supreme 2015:

  • World famous headliners including Van Morrison (Moondance & Brown Eyed Girl) and Chaka Khan (Ain’t Nobody & I’m Every Woman).
  • International acts from across the world, with a nice chunk of American jazz artists over for the festival – after all America does know a thing or two about jazz
  • A wide ranging line-up of artists, many of whom you will not be familiar with unless you are really into your jazz, but that really won’t stop you having a great time – the focus of Love Supreme is more based on rhythms, moods and grooves and Love Supreme 2015 will undoubtedly have more than you can shake a stick at!
Love Supreme 2015 - The Jazz Lounge
  • New for this year, The Jazz Lounge will be featuring discussion panels, artist Q&As, exclusive playbacks, film screenings and much more.
  • A well spaced out festival site – it’s not a huge site but everything is well-positioned to avoid sound bleeding between stages without everything being too far to easily travel between stages
  • A host of fantastic food and drink stalls and bars – I recommend the Grand Mariner Bar if it is back this year as for the last two years they have been a highlight. You can expect foods from all across the world, not just a burger van with questionable meats.
  • And if you don’t wanna stop dancing when the headliners have finished, Love Supreme 2015 will be featuring some great club nights in the Arena to keep the music going into the wee hours.  On Friday night there will be Jazz FM’s Funky Sensation, on Saturday, the electro-swinging White Mink : Black Cotton and closing out the weekend on Sunday night is Brighton’s very own Russ Dewbury – Jazz Rooms Sound System.

Camping at Love Supreme

Love Supreme Festival 2015 - Camping

There’s so much so see and do at Love Supreme, the best way to see as much as possible is to stay over in the dedicated camping area. Reason number 11 should be the weather, as this has been super-sunny the last two years – but let’s not jinx anything!

Love Supreme 2015 Line Up Release

Great news today as the first wave of acts performing at Love Supreme 2015 have been released; and they don’t disappoint.

Topping the line up so far, we have Ain’t Nobody‘s Chaka Khan,  the toughest looking Brown Eyed Girl  you will ever see, Van Morrison and US Jazz Vocalist Dianne Reeves, who just won the Grammy for Best Vocal Jazz Album last week! It’s great to see that the festival is reaching out at both ends of the spectrum, with classic established artists as well as breakthrough acts from across the globe.

Once again, the festival is sure to bring jazz fans from all across the country to the UK’s south coast, and if the weather is anything like the last two years, it’s going to be a scorcher, both musically and weather-wise.

Check out my preview of Love Supreme 2014 and my 6 new discoveries from the festival last year.

Tickets are from £55 for a day ticket and £110 for a weekend ticket. For full line up and tickets visit or check out their twitter or facebook.

Love Supreme – Ten Artists Not To Miss At Love Supreme 2014

With the full line up and stage times finally released, here are some of my hand-picked favourites for Love Supreme 2014, held in Glynde just outside Lewes and Brighton.

Friday 4th July

Fresh Like Dexie – Arena – 5pm

Brighton-based neo-funk collective Fresh Like Dexie combine influences of jazz, hip-hop, funk and pop in their keyboard and vocal heavy mix of fresh soul.

The Studio 9 Orchestra – Arena – 6pm

Another local act, Studio 9 Orchestra are a 19-piece orchestra, specialising in 20th century jazz, funk and latin music. Formed in 2011 by Scott Sheridan and Phillipe Guyard, it contains some of the finest jazz musicians that the south coast has to offer.

Saturday 5th July

Snarky Puppy – Main Stage – 2:15pm

Having just missed these guys performing twice in quick succession, I will not be making the same mistake after countless recommendations from friends. This New York-based group are an instrumental fusion band, led by Michael League, a GRAMMY Award-winning composer, producer and bassist. Following a sell out show at Cheltenham Jazz Festival last month, Snarky Puppy are the perfect way to ease yourself into the weekend of jazz at Love Supreme; with music that is experimental, innovative and down-right funky.

Normanton Street – Cocoface Bandstand – 5pm

Local superstars Normanton Street are so busy making moves, writing new songs and playing shows across the country, that it will surely not be long before they reach the big stages. With a host of great supports recently including MC Lars and Avery Sunshine, as well as mini UK and Welsh Tours, several performance at the Alternative Great Escape Festival and a headline performance on the Free Stage at Cheltenham Jazz Festival this year, who knows where you will see them playing next. See my interview with Normanton Street back in February here.

Laura Mvula – Main Stage – 5:45pm

Intimate and delicate, Laura Mvula’s songwriting has a simple beauty displayed in a clear glass case. A multi-award nominated and double MOBO and Urban Music Award winning performer, I have seen Laura perform twice and will definitely be there for number three. Read my review of her headline set at Cheltenham Jazz Festival here.

Jamie Cullum – Main Stage – 9:30pm

Always a promoter of new jazz with his Radio 2 show and getting stuck into the jazz scene with his involvement with Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Jamie Cullum’s latest album Momentum is something a little different from his smash-hit Twentysomething and its follow-ups. His new material shows a wider range of styles and a lot more shades to his musical palette without losing any of his energy and excitement in his performances. Read my review Jamie Cullum’s opening set at Cheltenham Jazz Festival here.

Sunday 6th July

Curtis Stigers – Big Top – 4pm

American jazz vocalist Curtis Stigers has been recording albums for over two decades, so he must be doing something right. Having seen him perform as part of ‘Friday Night Is Music Night Live’ at Cheltenham Jazz Festival last month alongside Lianne Caroll and Kurt Elling as guests vocalists, I am sure that he will not disappoint with his smooth voice and style to match. Read my review of Curtis Stiger’s performance at Cheltenham Jazz Festival here.

Imelda May – Main Stage – 6:30pm

My uncle is pretty clued up on the jazz scene, having been a professional musician for over 50 years, so when he suggests someone to listen to, I take his word that they will be great. Imelda May has an intensely busy touring schedule including festivals in the UK and Europe as well as a European tour from October until mid-December, so I’d assume a few people also think she is something special! Imelda’s authentic Rockabilly revival sound will get you dancing, (hopefully) in the sunshine. Her new album Tribal is out now.

Gregory Porter – Big Top – 7:30pm

One of the best vocal performers that I have ever had the privilege to not only see live but also chat with and enjoy the after-festival party with at Love Supreme. His vocal presence matches his tall stature and his songwriting is sincere, personal and poetic. Check him out!

De La Soul – Main Stage – 8:30pm

25 Years going strong, De La Soul have a busy summer lined up, full of touring dates as well as a host of big festival dates in the Europe and the US. Fresh from Glastonbury and Solidays Festival in Paris the week before, De La Soul are sure to be on top form for their headline closing set of Love Supreme 2014.

Weekend tickets are £125 camping, £110 non-camping.
Day tickets are available for just £55 adults and £30 under 18s.
